2. I was flunking out of college due to too much playing
around and was
drafted. After testing, I was given several options
and chose the SF
enlistment to be an engineer. After McCall and some
more testing, I
switched to medic...and never regretted that. I never
really thought about
making the military a career until after my second
enlistment was nearly
up. I just enjoyed SF and the soldiers I served with
more than wanting to
do anything else I could think of at that time. Once
I decided to go for
20, I also decided that OCS and the $ was a better
way to go in the long
run. If I had it to do over again, would have loved
to have gotten more
money...but it was worth it for the experience and
friendships...and even
the nostalgic sadness that sets in every time I get
The Drop and see so
many good MFers I served with passing on to the great
A-Camp in the sky.
Once I became an officer, I missed being an NCO and
sometimes regretted
going to OCS. Overall, I don't think I could have or
would have done it
any differently, though.
3. My military experience sure prepared me well for
my second career as a
teacher and high school principal. Y'all can't imagine
what gets passed
off out here as a "certified teacher." Most may have
degrees, but they
sure as hell would've flunked an Army ITC (Instructor
Tng Course) and never
made it through Tng Gp or gotten their 'hotel' identifier.
Having been an
SF NCO, it's easy.
No regrets!
