(2.) In 1967 I worked with the montangard
recon (by choice) and spent approximately 6 months of 7-10
day missions in the central
highlands many of which were back
to back. We were in a hot free fire zone area with a
lot of kills . I knew my luck was going to run
out sooner than later. I felt
my time was coming so I did not extend. The
recon patrol and I had been ambushed
26 times . That's
a lot of luck. A month after I Left
the team and the Army, 2 of my teammates
were WIA and (another KIA. ..his first mission) in the
same area.
(3) I didn't like the games
the officers played ....and the trickle down effect.
I preferred to be " an independent plunderer" I
probably
would have ended up in the
brig had it been peace time.
(4) Special forces gave me the confidence
in my self to know that I could make it anywhere .Unfortunately
the writing was on the wall
and one could see that in the
military one only make so much money and that was it.
The last thing I wanted in this world was
to be
a noncombatant taking shit
from some leg officer who had not been in combat
and giving me orders is some hell hole
like Ft. Polk ,
La.. to paint rocks and pick
up pine cones trying to get my "pension time in"
On that note I enlisted for jump school, Special
Forces, Medical School. and volunteered for assignment
to a free fire zone in Vietnam . I
have no regrets over my decisions and would
do it all over again....Only this time with more $$.
It is an honor still to be associated
with the the best and the brightest of America's
Fighting force..the men of Special Forces.
